Management is an intricate dance of art and science. My experience during my college thesis highlighted the complexity of this field. Just relying on theory wasn’t enough – it became apparent that there are no black and white rules. Everything depends on various factors, each case unique in its own context.
With these thoughts in mind, I decided to shape my college thesis as a case study, much like the ones I read on HBR. I explored leadership, finance, human resources, technology, and branding within the specific situation of a transformational change, an iconic independent hotel that converted into a franchised business. I looked at the economic environment of tourism at the time, interviewed the owners, the managers, saw their financial statements, the emotions, studied what was going on in the hotel chain world, reviewed what the competition was doing, saw the changes in technology, the impact on training, on their structure, how they had to rebrand themselves and get their employees onboard with that as well. l looked at the theory too. It was a fun and an enriching experience that solidified my understanding of management as a dynamic and adaptive practice.
After my MBA and a few years of experience, this blog is my way of staying engaged with the theoretical foundations while acknowledging the nuanced application in real-world scenarios. Through this blog I hope to remember, explore, learn, and share insights on management, strategy, leadership, marketing, and the evolving business landscape. Time is a limited resource! There will be long stretches without new posts. However, it’s fun to think of having a repository built over time.
